The idea for "Tarbert" came from a memory — warm but overcast, the air completely still. Tarbert is one of my favourite spots, exactly for that calm. It's a small town where the car ferries leave for Co. Clare — and it was from the pier, right where the ferries depart, that I saw the lighthouse from this angle. I've always found lighthouses quietly compelling — a little dreamy, even philosophical. Something about a small structure standing alone against all that water, holding its light steady no matter what — it feels like a quiet meditation on how we relate to something so much bigger than ourselves. Painting small, detailed pieces like this is its own kind of pleasure. Like a favourite treat you don't swallow whole but savour slowly with good coffee — each little boat, every reflection on the water, worth lingering over until the painting starts to breathe. The original painting was shown at my first solo exhibition, "The Place That Found Me," and sold on opening night.
