This is Crimea before — before the occupation, before everything changed. Warm memories, golden light settling on the cliffs, the sea calm and endless the way it always was in summer evenings like this one. Parus Rock, standing quietly in the water the way it has for as long as anyone can remember — indifferent to borders, to politics, to everything except the tide and the light. I painted this from memory, holding onto the Crimea I knew before it was taken. And I hold onto something else too — an unshaken belief that Crimea is, and will always be, Ukraine. One day I'll stand there again, not in memory, but in person, when Ukraine reclaims what's hers.
